Read guide ↗Begin with your goal rather than reading everything at once. Naming one hero? Start with character background and sound. Writing a campaign? Explore D&D-specific naming principles and ask whether every name can be said aloud at the table. Building a new fictional culture? Start with surnames, clans and settlements, then establish a repeatable pattern.
The guides are not official lore books. They explain a process using original examples so you can create a consistent style rather than copy a list.
Write down your character’s role, home region and strongest personality trait. Choose two or three sounds that feel appropriate, such as a soft opening followed by a firm ending. Generate several candidates and speak each one in a short line of dialogue.
Then add a surname or nickname connected to a personal story: a place of origin, a family tradition, a memorable deed or a relationship with the natural world. Keep a short list rather than settling on the first result.
Consistency matters more than complexity. Relatives can share a surname element, nearby villages can use related landscape words and members of one clan can favor similar rhythms. This helps readers notice connections without a long explanation.
